Alarmling is an alarm clock. Almost everything you do in it stays on your phone. This page sets out exactly what the app stores, what it sends and who receives it.

  • Alarms, missions, sleep and your Alarmling need no account. That data stays on your device.
  • Sleep recordings, photos for the photo mission and health data never leave your phone. The one exception is the sleep average you choose to share with friends.
  • We don't use analytics or crash reporting services.
  • The free version shows ads from Google. They are only personalised if you agree.
  • Friends and the league are optional. Only then does selected data go to our server, and you can delete all of it in the app.

2. What stays on your device

Alarmling keeps this data only in its own storage on your phone. We have no access to it. Only if you use Friends do some of these values go to our server (section 7).

  • Alarms and settings: times, repeats, sounds, missions, snooze, language and appearance.
  • Your Alarmling and your room: name, species, stage, XP, streaks, badges, moments, decor, points, season stars and lucky wheel prizes.
  • Diary and reports: wake-up times, snoozes, mood, sleep times and daily reports.
  • Sleep recordings: when you start sleep tracking, the app analyses the night's sounds on the device and keeps short clips (snoring, for example). The app deletes clips after 30 days and sleep sessions after 90 days, as soon as you next open the Sleep page or end a tracking session. You can't delete single recordings sooner in the app. Deleting the app removes them straight away.
  • Photo mission pictures: the reference photo you take for the mission stays in the app's folder. Photo matching and the household item hunt run on the device (Apple Vision or Google ML Kit).
  • Health data: see section 4.
  • Widget: the widget gets a small local copy, such as your next alarm and your Alarmling.
  • Backup: when you export your alarms, the app creates a JSON file and opens your phone's share sheet. You decide where the file goes.

If you delete the app, this data is gone. We can't restore it.

3. Permissions and what they're for

The app only asks for a permission when you use the feature that needs it. You can withdraw any of them in your phone's settings.

PermissionWhat for
Alarms, notificationsSo your alarm rings on time, even when the app is closed. All notifications are local. There are no push messages from a server.
MicrophoneSleep tracking and the "Say the word on beat" mission.
Speech recognitionThe "Say the word on beat" mission checks that you said your sentence. Details in section 5.
CameraQR and barcode mission, photo mission and household item hunt. The camera image is analysed on the device and never uploaded.
Motion and fitnessStep, shake and squat missions. The readings stay on the device.
Location (while using, approximate)Morning weather, the spoken weather and weather notification when you wake up, plus sunrise and sunset for your room. The app rounds your location to about 1 km before using it. Without it, the app uses the city of your time zone or a city you search for.
Apple Health / Health ConnectReading sleep data, optional. Details in section 4.
Tracking (iPhone only)Only asked after you've agreed to personalised ads. Details in section 6.
Android: display over other apps, accessibility, device admin, battery exception, Do Not DisturbOptional helpers so your alarm rings reliably and you can't switch it off or uninstall the app while half asleep. The accessibility service only acts while an alarm with this guard is ringing: if you open the power menu, notification shade, quick settings or home screen, it brings the alarm back. It doesn't read other apps' content and sends nothing. On the device, it only counts how often it stepped in.

4. Health data

If you turn on the import in Settings > Sleep, Alarmling reads sleep times from Apple Health or Health Connect. It only reads and never writes anything back. It reads at most the last 30 nights, and only while the app is open.

This data stays on your device. It never goes to advertising partners and is never used for ads. The one exception is your choice: if you turn on "Share sleep" in Friends, a weekly average rounded to 15 minutes goes to our server so your friends can see it (section 7).

Sleep stages in Alarmling are an estimate, not a medical measurement.

5. Services that receive data from the app

Weather and sun times: Open-Meteo

For weather, air quality, sunrise and sunset the app queries the free service Open-Meteo. It sends the coordinates of your location, rounded to about 1 km, or the name of the city you searched for or that matches your time zone. Like any internet request, Open-Meteo also sees your IP address. The app sends no identifier of yours.

Place names: your phone's geocoder

To turn your location into a place name, the app uses your operating system's built-in service. The rounded coordinates go to Apple or Google for this.

Speech recognition

On iPhone, Alarmling recognises speech on the device when the language model is available. If it isn't, iOS uses Apple's speech recognition on Apple's servers. On Android, your phone's speech recognition service handles it, usually Google's, which may send the audio to its servers. Alarmling itself doesn't keep these recordings.

Purchases: Apple App Store and Google Play

You buy Pro through the App Store or Google Play. Only Apple or Google receive your payment details. The app only asks the store whether a purchase is active.

Emailing us

The feedback form in the app doesn't send anything itself. It puts your message into an email, adds the app version, platform and system version, and opens your mail app. There you see everything before sending and can change it. Whether you write to us this way or by email directly, we receive your email address, your message and any device details in the email. We only use this to reply to you.

6. Advertising

The free version of Alarmling shows ads from Google AdMob (Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland). There are never ads on the ringing screen. During missions you solve on the screen (such as Math or Typing) and on "Good job", a banner may appear at the bottom. With Pro you see no banners and no ad cards. Reward videos only ever play when you start them.

The app loads no ads until you've made a choice. You choose between personalised and non-personalised ads:

  • Non-personalised: Google picks ads without a profile of you, based on things like the app and your approximate location from your IP address. Google still processes device data, for example to prevent fraud and to count how often an ad was shown.
  • Personalised: Google and its partners may use data such as your device's advertising ID to show more relevant ads. On iPhone, iOS then also asks whether Alarmling may track you across apps. If you say no there, ads run without the advertising ID.

Where the law requires it, Google also shows its own consent form. You can change your choice at any time in Settings > About > Privacy choices, which also has Google's privacy options. How Google uses data: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

7. Friends and league (optional)

Friends is the only place where Alarmling creates an account on our server. It starts only when you choose "Create friends profile" in the app. Our server runs on Supabase (Supabase, Inc.), which stores the data on our behalf.

Signing in

  • With Apple: the app requests neither your name nor your email address. We store an identifier that Apple creates for Alarmling, an encrypted token from Apple (refresh token) and our app's ID at Apple (client ID). We only need the token to revoke the sign-in with Apple when you delete your friends account. It is deleted along with the account.
  • With Google: Google passes on your ID, email address, name and profile picture. Our sign-in service stores them. None of it goes into your friends profile, and your friends never see it.

What your friends see

  • Your Alarmling's name, species, stage and level. The name is checked on the server. If it isn't allowed, friends see a neutral name such as "Brave Otter".
  • Only if you turn it on: streak, a week without snoozing, snoozes per week, average wake-up time (rounded to 30 minutes) and average sleep (rounded to 15 minutes). Every share starts switched off. When you switch one off, the app deletes the value from the server.
  • Only in the league: your number of suns per day. Friends can't see whether you got up without snoozing on a given day. For scoring, though, your friends in the league receive how many mornings that week you did. Results of duels and league weeks are stored too.

What else the server stores

  • Friendships and blocks, invite codes (8 characters, valid for 7 days, single use) and attempts to redeem codes, to slow down abuse.
  • When a friendship ends: who was friends with whom and when it ended, so a report is still possible for 7 days. The server deletes older entries as soon as anyone sends the next report, and right away when you delete your account.
  • Reports: who reported whom, the reason ("name" or "other") and when. There is no free text field.
  • For league rewards, a random installation ID so each reward arrives only once.

There is no chat, no public leaderboard and no way to search for strangers. You only find friends through invite codes. Syncing only happens while the app is open.

Deleting

In Settings > Friends > What friends see you can delete your friends account. We then immediately delete your profile, shares, friendships, league data, reports and sign-in account. If you signed in with Apple, we first revoke the sign-in with Apple. If that doesn't work at the moment, the account stays and you can try again later. Your alarms and everything else on your device stay as they are.

Already removed the app? Email support@alarmling.com with the subject "Delete friends account". Tell us whether you signed in with Apple or Google and, if you can, write from that account's email address. If you used Apple's Hide My Email, give us your Alarmling's name in Friends instead. We may ask one question to make sure the account is yours. Then we delete the same data as above within 30 days and confirm by email. Copies in our server backups disappear when those backups are overwritten.

How reporting and blocking work is described in the Friends rules.

8. Legal bases (for users in the EU and UK)

  • Contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR): alarms, weather, purchases and the Friends feature you switch on yourself.
  • Consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR and the ePrivacy rules): personalised ads and access to device identifiers for them. You can withdraw it in the app at any time.
  • Explicit consent (Art. 9(2)(a) GDPR): importing health data and sharing your sleep duration with friends.
  • Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR): protecting the Friends feature from abuse, such as reports, blocks and limits, and answering your requests.

9. How long we keep data

  • Data on your device: until you delete it or remove the app. Sleep clips 30 days and sleep sessions 90 days. After that, the app deletes them as soon as you open the Sleep page or end a tracking session.
  • Friends data: until you delete your friends account. Invite codes expire after 7 days.
  • Emails to us: as long as we need them for your request, and after that only where the law requires.

10. Transfers outside the EU

Google, Apple and Supabase may also process data in the United States. Where the provider is certified, we rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, otherwise on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.

11. Your rights

You have the right to access, correct and delete your data, to restrict or object to processing, and to data portability. You can withdraw any consent at any time for the future. Just write to support@alarmling.com. Since we don't hold most of your data at all, this mainly concerns the Friends feature. You can also complain to a data protection authority, for example in the country where you live.

12. Children

Alarmling is not directed at children under 13. If you're under 16, please ask a parent before using Friends or agreeing to personalised ads.

13. Changes

When the app changes, we update this policy. The date at the top shows the current version. We'll point out important changes in the app.
